Hypertext can do things we never could do without it.
But we also need to demonstrate mastery of the medium. We need to be able to command tension and excitement, to retell familiar stories and to recapture familiar rhythms.
Yes, some things come easier to some media. But art often comes from working against the grain.
We train writers through exercises, just like musicians. We need to do our scales.
We need to show proficiency -- to the world, and to ourselves. Characters we love. Cliffhangers. Incredibly erotic scenes. Cream pies and clowns. Villains. Schlemiels.
