I remember the way my cat's tongue protruded from her mouth
in that odd way that cat's tongues sometimes do
as she lay between my legs
while I entered (in retrospect bad) poetry
on my roommate's Apple II+ computer in a studio apartment
not far from DuPont circle._____

I remember the way her soft black fur felt under my hands
and the sound the lapping of her tongue made
in counterpart to the constantly falling rain.

____Shadow Castle? It was a battered thin green book
about fairies. (of the mythical kind)
It was also about waiting - about absence and distance.
I looked for a copy in the library, but they didn't have one.
