Writing Space is the first significant mention of the Bolter Test.

Both Writing Space and The Gutenberg Elegies explore the differences between the volatility of text on the screen and the apparent permanence of ink. Unfortunately, sloppy citation practices prevent us from knowing whether Birkerts knew of Bolter's work.
