Participants may not like the results, but if the process is fair, reasonable, and above board, they'll probably accept the analyses.

Throughout the decision process, you need a track record to build credibility, acquaint new participants, and show rationales. Consistently documenting how you chose and applied tools helps to present the analysis and show participants how their ideas and comments were used.

Use the Tool Selection Worksheet to document:

  • Tools you used
  • Reasons for using the tools
  • The results

This shows that you approached the problem in a balanced, analytical way. Just like your old math classes--you need to show how you arrived at an answer to get credit. A record of why you did what you did will also help support management decisions and court actions. Keeping this record also provides a common language and methodology. This allows others to easily review your decision process and apply your methods to other activities without having to guess what you did or how you did it.
